The LIAT Twin Otter flight from Canefield, Dominica, is how flying should be – fun, lots to see (especially with the large windows), a little scary, and short. En route to Antigua, the stop over is about 15 minutes at Guadeloupe, when one usually sits in the plane and awaits any passengers going on to Antigua.

Until now. Because of a ‘new law’, as the sulky but stylish French female ground staff told us, we had to get off the plane, follow her around into the airport, up several flights of stairs, through a security check again, and back down and out to the plane.

If you’re a fanatic hiker, you’ll find it hard to leave Dominica without tackling all its trails, mountains, and exotic treasures. A hike up Morne Diablatins, Dominica’s highest peak is a beautiful if grueling trek that rewards hikers with a stunning 360o view of the island and the surrounding crystal-blue waters. Dominica has 365 rivers, so they say, and several mind-blowing waterfalls—the force of a river cascading 130 feet over a rock face will literally blow you away. Every journey down a river, jumping from slippery rock to slippery rock, is a path to a picture-perfect setting. Take lunch and a bottle of ginger wine.

In Dominica, you can fill your belly on fruits and nuts picked from the trees as you walk down a dirt road. The markets in town are also bursting with an abundance of diverse, tasty, and cheap produce. And if a Dominican tells you he’s going to do some farming, he means he will hike three hours up a mountain and stay on his land for several days sleeping in a shack made of “galvanize” and cooking over an open fire. It’s not your grandfather’s cornfield in Nebraska.

A coalition of environmentalists in Dominica has announced plans to protest a planned oil refinery that would be financed under Venezuela’s Petrocaribe energy programme.

Activists warn that the 76 million US dollar refinery could threaten the environment on the island, which promotes itself as one of the Caribbean’s top eco-tourism attractions.

But backers say the facility will supply much-needed jobs and diversify Dominica’s fragile economy.

The Spokesman of the Waitukubuli Ecological Foundation, Joseph Williams, said the group is organising several rallies in the coming weeks.

The refinery is expected to produce 10 thousand barrels of oil a day.
It is part of the PetroCaribe agreement, under which Venezuela provides oil on cheap terms to the Caribbean.
