Dominica’s Prime Minister has summoned the Chair of Wibdeco to discuss the current banana dispute between the banana exporting company and some of the banana companies in the Windward islands, especially St Lucia and Dominica.

These companies have not yet been certified under the Fair Trade label.

Wibdeco has indicated that it is likely to enter into an agreement with the St Vincent-based Windward Islands Farmers Association which has fair trade certification.

At a news conference in Roseau today, Prime Minister Skerrit said he has had discussions with Wibdeco chief executive Bernard Cornibert about the matter.

“The government of Dominica has an interest in Wibdeco. It is a shareholding company and therefore we have certain levels of leverage in respect to Wibdeco.

The Prime Minister said he has indicated to Mr Cornibert that Wibdeco put a stay of execution on the signing of the agreement with Winfa, a representative a representative body that is not a national banana company
