Steve Dominica blog has wrote “Otter with big eyes

The LIAT Twin Otter flight from Canefield, Dominica, is how flying should be – fun, lots to see (especially with the large windows), a little scary, and short. En route to Antigua, the stop over is about 15 minutes at Guadeloupe, when one usually sits in the plane and awaits any passengers going on to Antigua.

Until now. Because of a ‘new law’, as the sulky but stylish French female ground staff told us, we had to get off the plane, follow her around into the airport, up several flights of stairs, through a security check again, and back down and out to the plane.

Getting the bird

A recent newspaper article voiced concerns by farmers in Dominica that wildlife – especially parrots – had made such a comeback that their numbers were impacting on farmers’ crops. Apparently they’re very partial to grapefruits.

Redheads Guide to Dominica” from Class & Circumstance

Me and my neighbor Wesley are headed for the island of Dominica (not to be confused with The Dominican Republic) tomorrow to hang with her mom in the banana fields till Sunday…and I haven’t a thing to wear (truthfully, because all my clothes have holes in them, but that’s a story for another time, and will be coupled with a request for a benefactor/ess to help me replenish my clothes since we’ve had an attack of the moths). It actually crossed my mind, believe it or not, to solicit funds for clothing for Amigos members after I bleached a pair of my work pants (on top of all my holy clothes) the other day trying to keep the floors clean for my coccidia-laden kittens.

Sky the photo of the day and 7 Simple Rules to Live More Like a Zen Monk from Dominica Weekly dot Com

Firstly, I’m not a monk, nor will I ever become one. However, I find great inspiration in the way they try to live their lives: the simplicity of their lives, the focus and mindfulness of every activity, the calm and peace they find in their everyday life.

You probably don’t want to become a Zen monk either, but you can live your life in a more Zen-like manner by following 10 simple rules.

Why live more like a Zen monk? Because who among us can’t use a little more concentration, serenity, and mindfulness in our lives? Because monks for hundreds of years have devoted their lives to being present in everything they do, to being dedicated and to serving others. Because it serves as an example for our lives and whether we ever really reach that ideal is not the point.

Dominica is Everyone’s Paradise

Dominica is known as the “Nature Island” of the Caribbean, but the abundance of food, fun, and friendliness is also worth exploring!

If you want to slow down, sit back, and take in all the beauty that Mother Nature provides, there is no paradise that compares to Dominica. The rhythm of life there is mellow; you’ll find yourself on “island time” in no time at all. It’s the kind of place where doing your laundry takes all day and taking a five-mile trip down the road is an epic journey because a) you will stop and talk to everyone you pass and b) the buses and pick-up trucks that traverse its windy mountain roads are few and far between. No problem, Mon, no hurry. You’re in paradise. You’re already there.

If you’re a fanatic hiker, you’ll find it hard to leave Dominica without tackling all its trails, mountains, and exotic treasures. A hike up Morne Diablatins, Dominica’s highest peak is a beautiful if grueling trek that rewards hikers with a stunning 360o view of the island and the surrounding crystal-blue waters. Dominica has 365 rivers, so they say, and several mind-blowing waterfalls—the force of a river cascading 130 feet over a rock face will literally blow you away. Every journey down a river, jumping from slippery rock to slippery rock, is a path to a picture-perfect setting. Take lunch and a bottle of ginger wine.

In Dominica, you can fill your belly on fruits and nuts picked from the trees as you walk down a dirt road. The markets in town are also bursting with an abundance of diverse, tasty, and cheap produce. And if a Dominican tells you he’s going to do some farming, he means he will hike three hours up a mountain and stay on his land for several days sleeping in a shack made of “galvanize” and cooking over an open fire. It’s not your grandfather’s cornfield in Nebraska.
