Dominican doctors to strike
Doctors in the Dominican Republic have threatened another strike next week in their campaign for a pay increase.

This time, their union, the Dominican Medical Association, says it will be for 48 hours.

The union staged a 24-hour stoppage last week.

It says the walk-out next Wednesday and Thursday will not affect emergencies.

The association’s leader, Dr. Waldo Ariel Suero said only president Leonel Fernandez can prevent the strike as the Health minister has been unable to meet union’s their demands for more pay, pensions and internships.

Sustainable Development Ideas for Dominica
The whole idea of an oil refinery in Dominica was clearly a bad idea, that’s why my many Dominicans rallied against the idea – forcing Prime Minister Skerrit to put all plans of the oil refinery on hold. Hooray for that. But Dominica still faces an economic crisis, cost of living is on a steady rise, fuel is also taking its toil, and not forgetting the price of electricity.

Prime Minister publicizes that any Dominican wishing to share ideas on how to help develop Dominica can make an appointment to see him. We at Dominica Weekly made two attempts to setup an appointment with the PM, to share several ideas we came up with that can help Dominica develop and also help in the curbing the problem of high electricity bills. But our attempts were unsuccessful.

We decided to develop this website called Caribbean Investments, where everyone can read the different ideas. We offer an energy program on the basis of progress and sustainable development of Dominica. Dominica, following its image of the pristine island, can provide a power, which completely expelling the oil products from the island. Dominica people must implement these ideas; the government should not be only a trendsetter in the construction of new ideas and should not bear the monetary costs to realize this projects.

Dominica Speaker wins in court

Dominica’s Speaker of parliament on Wednesday said she felt vindicated, after a court ruled in her favour in a case brought by the opposition United Workers Party.

Following a verbal confrontation in the House in January of last year, the Speaker ordered six UWP parliamentarians suspended from the House.

They were protesting that their questions placed on the order paper had been changed by Speaker Alix Boyd-Knights.

Mrs Boyd-Knights said at the time that she’d made the changes because some parts of the questions did not conform with the Standing Orders of the House.

Justice Davidson Baptiste heard the case last June, and on Wednesday he ruled that the actions of the Speaker were in order.

Opposition leader Earl Williams said taking the parliamentary option open to the opposition MPs would have handed the governing Labour Party another victory.

He said the UWP’s case was in pursuit of natural justice.

BBS today publish Roosevelt Skerrit message

The Prime Minister of Dominica has again sprung to the defence of his country’s membership of ALBA, a Venezuelan-backed political and economic multi-national agreement.

Roosevelt Skerrit described it as an aid cooperation accord which will bring benefits to Dominica.

He accused the local opposition of scaremongering over its claims about ALBA.

Specifically, he denied that Dominica will be part of any Alba military alliance.

Dominica future program

1. The getting of electricity in the required quantities for domestic use of island residents and for production needs from the local raw materials and some part from the garbage or waste. And electricity will be received by the large towns or several adjacent buildings or individual homes.

2. Clever use of the electricity:

a. Traditional – for households with gas stoves will be replaced with more user-friendly electric ovens.
b. Transfer gradually some part of transport to use reserved electricity in batteries, another part of transportation – to use the energy of compressed air.

3. Establish the production of national car for Dominicans on the island.

4. Attract interested scientists from developed countries for the scientific study: make Dominica to be the scientific research polygon of the future technology.

In basis of our concept of development states the well tested and proven in the practice technical solutions. Many of them had been used widely and successfully in the past, but have been pushed out to please the oil mafia, which has created the myth that humanity, which tens and thousand of years successfully avoided oil cannot longer do without it. This is not true, and we have to prove the opposite: we call on the front edge for technological progress, that whould allow humans to live in harmony with the nature, without poison it by no typical for its products: the villainous convulsions of modern atomic-oil civilization.

We hope, that the one of the most attractive proposals for Dominicans – it is the creation on the island “national/folk” car, which available to all active citizens of the island – the idea was brilliantly realized by American Henry Ford in his time. We will have to repeat its success across the island and, perhaps, all of the Caribbean islands.

Dominica it’s real need help to be saved

Dominica is depending too much from the outside, the US or Venezuela, Europe or China…it is time, that we start using the money we get to invest into things, which will prosper in future and that Dominica will be able to stand by itself. The aim is not to stay a beggar, but to get independent!!! I know, not easy at all. But why not investing into an alternative power solution. It doesn’t has to be the expensive Geothermal option. We have sun and wind all year through! Dominica could become a pilot project in alternativ power resources and it would shine as a unique island and keep its logo as the nature island. We would even be able to export power! Oil is not the future, at least not the longterm one. The oil resources are about to be done and oil will get more and more expensive and the ones who have it, will be the ones who rule….do we have to go down that road? We still have the privilige to choose now, but if we go deeper into dept, we wont have that choice anymore!
NOT to mention the risk we have with an oil refinery on the island. One little accident and we will suffer for a long, long time. I have nothing against taking risks, as long as it is not jeopardizing my life, but I dont want to take that risk! The oil refinery is planed to be a 10′000 barrel-a-day refinery. Antigua closed its 35′000-a-day refinery because losing money! You don’t have to be a genius to see, that there is something wrong with the promises of money. The tourisme industry will loose jobs, if the oilrefinery is being built. So, what about these promises of building new jobs???
What about the concern of a military alliance agains USA, which Chavez has mentioned. Well, Dominica doesn’t has a army, but isn’t its location, right in between Venezuela and the States, ideal for a venezuelan military base? With a proper airport and oil? If somebody is able to start a war against the States, than Mr Chavez. Do we want to be in middle of it? NO!
An idea for everybody: start buying dominican products, instead of the imported ones. I know, there are not so many products, but if we invest into these products, and keep the money in the state, there will be more coming eventually. Why is everybody going to KFC to get chicken? Why not buying the chicken at a small shop right next to KFC? Because they dont have a drive through? Are Dominicans getting so lazy? Fast Food, Fast Money….both not healthy!

Good ideas for Dominicans… You opinion can help Dominica. Say it now!

BBC has writen about Caribbean annual Carnivals:

The annual carnival season in the Caribbean is kicking off with Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, Haiti, Aruba and Curacao.

There are also events in Guadeloupe, Martinique, the Dominican Republic, French St Martin, Bonaire and Guyana’s Mashramani late February.

But are carnivals in the Caribbean in danger of losing their social and historical relevance by becoming too modern and commercial?

Or is it just a matter of changing with the times?

We have a some photos and well be glad to present this:
